Aristotle University of Thessaloniki organized an 1-day national stakeholder training, within the project MARLITER “Improved online public access to environmental monitoring data and data tools for the Black Sea Basin supporting cooperation in the reduction of marine litter" with funding from the Joint Operational Program "Black Sea Basin 2014-2020", (European Neighbourhood & Partnership Instrument - ENPI). The workshop took place online on Thursday 15 July, at a virtual meeting room via Zoom Platform. At the training, scientific experts related to environmental sciences, sustainable development, marine ecology, conservation biology, management of protected areas were participated and provided their valuable experience on the issue of marine litter. The experts made presentations regarding the tools and the material developed within the MARLITER project, i.e. the ICT tool and the policy toolbox. The training also included presentations and interactive discussions on the potential impacts of marine litter on the environment and the biodiversity, good practices for the reduction of marine litter and the contribution of youth, volunteers and concerned citizens into environmental monitoring and the fight against the serious environmental problems. The workshop was attended by teachers, students, youth volunteers, representatives of sectoral agencies and businesses, representatives of NGOs and concerned citizens. The participants gained critical knowledge and experience on the use of the ICT tool and committed to further promote the good practices for marine litter reduction to larger audience.
A second part of the Regional Training was conducted as a concluding hybrid regional event in Thessaloniki, Greece, entitled “Policies and Sustainable Solutions for Extension of Project Achievements and Black Sea Cross-Border Cooperation”, on 13 and 14 July 2021. The event was attended by representatives of the partners, steering committee members, policy makers, stakeholders and environmental experts. There was also the option for online participation for the partners who were not able to travel due to COVID-19 or other restrictions.

The Public Event took place online on Friday 9 July, at a virtual meeting room via Zoom Platform. Stakeholders, students, representatives of Research Institutes and universities, NGOs, representatives of sectoral agencies related to environmental management and protection, representatives of enterprises and businesses attended the event. AUTH research team presented the policy toolbox that has been developed within the ICT based tool, demonstrating the structure, the content and the utilities, i.e., the stakeholders database, the overview of the legislation and the section with the recommendations for reducing marine litter. In addition, members of the AUTH research team demonstrated the educational material that has been developed. A discussion with all the participants was followed, in which AUTH research team provided clarifications on different aspects of the tools and the educational sources. The event was considered successful while the presentations and the material attracted the attention of various stakeholders and the media.
A 2-day regional training, entitled “Knowledge-Sharing Tools for Black Sea Cross-Border Cooperation” was implemented online, via zoom platform at 4 and 5 June. Experts from the five countries related to management of natural recourses, environment, agriculture and ecology, tourism activities, environmental education, water management, maritime administration, marine litter, marine research, oceanology and management of vulnerable species and habitats, originated from universities, research institutes, NGOs, sectoral agencies, national authorities and businesses, provided their knowledge and expertise on different aspects of regional cooperation for marine litter issue. The regional training was attended by students, researchers, representatives of sectoral agencies, national and local authorities, businesses and representatives of NGOs. It included presentations and interactive discussions on the achievements of MARLITER and their sustainability, on the policy tools and measures to reduce marine litter, on the cross-border dimensions, on the status on marine litter and the state of the marine country at national level and on good practices for the reduction of marine litter. The experts offered to the participants valuable experience and knowledge to increase involvement of local communities in prevention of pollution, promote the module and the cycle for adaptive policy measures on marine litter in the Black Sea and support the decision-making process.

The Public Event took place online on Thursday 19 November, at a virtual meeting room via Zoom Platform. Stakeholders, students, representatives of Research Institutes and universities, NGOs, representatives of sectoral agencies related to environmental management and protection, representatives of enterprises, businesses and public authorities attended the event. AUTH research team presented the developed ICT based tool, demonstrating the structure, the functionality and the content that has been integrated in the web-based internet portal, i.e., background information, geospatial data, toolboxes, databases. A discussion with all the participants was followed in which AUTH research team provided clarifications on different aspects of the tool and suggested potential applications and uses. The event was considered successful while the ICT based tool attracted the interest from various stakeholders and the media.

The training took place online on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 November, at a virtual meeting room via Zoom Platform. At the training of trainers, experts related to environmental education, management of cooperation projects, protection of aquatic ecosystems, citizen science applications, conservation and management of vulnerable species and habitats, originated from universities, sectoral agencies, NGOs and training centres, provided their knowledge and expertise on different aspects of the marine litter issue. The training of trainers was attended by teachers, students, youth volunteers, representatives of sectoral agencies and businesses, representatives of NGOs and groups of citizens. The training of trainers included presentations and interactive discussions on application of environmental education actions, opportunities for public involvement in collaborative strategies, enhancement of citizen science, implementation of beach litter monitoring and clean-up campaigns, etc. The experts offered to the participants data, background information and tools so as to increase involvement of local communities in prevention of pollution and mitigation activities, promote the development and application of management and monitoring strategies and enhance knowledge regarding environmental protection and joint reduction of marine litter. The participants gained valuable experience and committed to further transfer and disseminate the acquired knowledge to larger audience.
The regional workshop “Stocktaking Meeting of the Study of Data and Information for ICT based Tool of MARLITER” organized by Mare Nostrum NGO, in Romania, took place on 3th and 4th of July 2019, at Hotel Ibis, Constanta. This workshop was attended by 44 participants in the first day and 34 participants in the second day from Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia and Ukraine.
The workshop was based on the development of a regional information and knowledge sharing network on marine litter and the involvement of all stakeholders (public institutions, research institutes, NGOs, schools, etc.). Moreover, representatives of partner countries talked about the situation of marine litter in their countries and what information is available and how can be included on the interactive portal.
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) organized a 2-day national level workshop, entitled "Marine Litter: The need for knowledge, synergies and actions", within the project MARLITER “Improved online public access to environmental monitoring data and data tools for the Black Sea Basin supporting cooperation in the reduction of marine litter" with funding from the Joint Operational Program "Black Sea Basin 2014-2020", (European Neighbourhood & Partnership Instrument - ENPI). The workshop took place on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 February, at the hall "Manolis Anagnostakis", at the New Town Hall of Thessaloniki. At the workshop, stakeholders in environmental protection, monitoring and reduction of marine litter participated, originated from national public authorities (i.e. Alternate Minister for the Environment and Energy), local public authorities (i.e. Deputy Mayor on Urban Resilience and Development Planning), scientific institutions, universities, businesses, NGOs, sectoral agencies, education/training centres. Through the presentations and the discussions, the necessity of taking joint actions, developing standardized, common monitoring protocols for marine litter, collating and producing standardized data, enhancing the public access on available data for environmental monitoring and ensuring social engagement were highlighted. The participated stakeholders committed to further contribute at the next steps of the implementation of the project.

The Public Event took place on Tuesday 27 November, at the hall "Konstantinos Kastritsis", on the 10th floor of the School of Biology, AUTH. Stakeholders, students, volunteers, representatives of Research Institutes, NGOs, representatives of enterprises, businesses and local and regional public authorities attended the event. AUTH research team presented the project objectives, activities and expected outputs. Through the presentations, the serious issue of marine litter and the necessity of taking joint actions and contributing to the improvement of the public online access to available data and tools for environmental monitoring and to the support of adaptive management policies, education and capacity building to reduce marine litter, were highlighted. In addition, the idea and the concept of the ICT based tool, which is going to be developed during the project, were also presented. The event was considered successful while the project attracted interest from various stakeholders and the media.
